The ongoing protest at the University of Ibadan
» has caused the school authorities to suspend
the Matriculation ceremony which was scheduled
for Thursday, March 10.
It has also been revealed that four students were
allegedly injured as the protest became more
violent.
The protest was staged by non-academic staff
union over non-remittance of deductions and
unpaid agreed allowance.
Yesterday, March 9, four freshmen were injured
when students, 3,500 of them, were gathered for
an orientation programme and the workers from
three non academic unions emerged to disrupt
proceedings.

Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor
Idowu Olayinka said of the incident, ” while trying
to run for safety, about four students were
seriously injured and they have been taken to the
school clinic. It is so unfortunate that the freshers
were exposed to vigorous union protest, it could
have been your daughter or my own son.”
He added it was better to have students over
3,500 safe and sound than going ahead with the
matriculation and risking their lives.
Olayinka also noted that the allowances being
clamored for by the unions amounted to about
N76 million naira monthly which is outside the
allocations to the university » and unrealistic in
view of the present financial strain facing the
institution.
