Reopening of Schools: See Mixed Reactions from Students

Federal Government of Nigeria, on Monday 27th July, announced that secondary schools around the federation are to resume on the 4th of August 2020, specifically for exit classes only.

Ben Bem Goong, the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, announces the development in a press statement released today in Abuja.

Ben in his statement explained that the decisions were reached at a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, Commissioners of Education of the 36 states, the Nigerian Union of Teachers, (NUT), Proprietors of private schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.

According to the statement, conclusions reached in the meeting include, the secondary school students in exit classes should resume on 4th August immediately after the Sallah break, West African Examination candidates should get prepared to take their WAEC examinations due to commence from the 17th of August 2020, another meeting will be held tomorrow between the Federal Ministry of Education and Chief Executives of examination bodies (NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS) to finalize their examination dates, which will be conveyed to stakeholders expeditiously by the Federal Ministry of Education.

It should be recalled that for months now, the Federal Government has been meeting with stakeholders in the education sector regarding the safe reopening of schools across the country following the prolonged shutdown of academic institutions (schools) around the country due to the dreadful COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, students of all categories have been waiting patiently to hear the breaking news of the safe reopening of school.

However, it turned to disappointment today after the Federal Government announces the reopening focusing only on secondary school final students.

Nevertheless, some students express their dissatisfaction as regards the development.

The above are some screenshots taken from student reactions after the announcement was made on The Ministry of Education social media (twitter) handle @NigEducation.

However, we will like to receive your opinion through the comments box below this page.

Is it wise for the federal government to open schools for secondary school exit students only, leaving behind universities, polytechnic among other academic institutions?
