The former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of Transportation, Honourable Rotimi Amaechi has recently made some claims about the Origin of his tribe, The Ikwerre tribe. The minister has on wednesday stated that the origin of his tribe can be traced to the Igbo people and he can confidently call himself an Igbo man and speak on their behalf.
But contrary to Amaechi’s claim, an Igbo Union from the Niger Delta region, BRACED, which consist of Igbo people from Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, Cross River, Enugu and Delta states denied the claims by the Honourable minister. This contained in a statement released by the publicity director of the union, Comrade Patrick Ochei.
The statement reads that the Minister has no right to even talk on behalf of Ikwerre people talkless of Igbo People or the Niger Delta region region in general no matter what political status he attained in the country. Mr Patrick stated that the proximity between Ikwerre people and Igbo people leaving in the Niger Delta region does’nt meant that they are Igbo too and therefore Amaechi needs to consult history gurus and ask about his origin before making such statements in the future.
According to him, the only union that has right to speak on behalf of Niger Delta region is the BRACED union and hence Amaechi’s claim is voided by the union. The Union also accused Amaechi of throwing tantrums to achieve his political propaganda and mischief. The statement by the minister was described as an aberration by Comrade Patrick, because proximity alone can never make Amaechi and his people part of Igbo Tribe.
