ABAKALIKI – It was moment of tears in Ebonyi State as a pregnant woman was crushed to death Thursday by a speeding truck, just after four policemen were shot dead by armed bandits in the same area.
The development has thrown the people of the Ndubia Community of Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi, the home of the dead woman and child.
However, the full identity of the pregnant woman was yet to be ascertained.
It was gathered that the incident occurred when the deceased were on their way to a nearby market to sell cassava to enable her foot the hospital bill of her sick child.
The deceased, a middle aged woman, whose child had been sick for few days, was battling to save the little child, making her to harvest some of her crops to raise money.
An eyewitness said the driver of the trailer who was said to be on a very high speed could not control the heavy duty vehicle on sighting the woman.
It was also gathered that the drive ran to a nearby police station immediately the accident happened to avoid angry mob action.
Some of the residents of the area called on relevant authorities to ensure that there are speed bumps in some of the newly constructed roads in the rural areas as most drivers now take advantage of the good road to over-speed.
They said that construction of speed bumps would go a long way to save the lives of the rural dwellers who are not yet used to the fact that the roads are now major express road.
