On 10th presidential address on Covid 19, the president directed the Ministry of Education to restructure the reopening of schools calendar. This saw the ministry of education pushing the reopening of schools to January 2021 to safeguard learners and teachers from Corona virus.

However, the Senate Education Committee is pushing for the reopening of schools partially. Under the chairperson, nominated senator, Hon. Alice Milgo, has tabled a motion asking the ministry of education to reopen schools in phases beginning September.

She stated that phased reopening will allow division of classrooms into smaller manageable groups. She said that first priority to be given to the candidates including classes eight and form four students. In report, lessons should cover similar topics including ways of preventing Corona virus and how to respond to emergencies. It further stated that all sporting activities and morning parades should be aborted. Learners and teachers should adhere to social distancing. Washing of hands and and wearing of masks.

The committee also suggested that the ministry of education should involve other agencies like KDF and NYS to assist in supplying of water.

Further, the county Directors of Education should always ensure that schools meet the minimum health and safety measures to curb covid 19. Should this pass, the teachers have no option but to go back to class. There has been criticism that teachers are paid for work not done.
