Some say this is a big achievement for Donald Trump, a big Foreign Relations success that might improve Trump’s rating as he seeks re-election as the President of the United States of America for a second term. For those unaware of this achievement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), an Arab nation was among other Middle East nations that have never recognized Israel before. A very strange relationship between brothers, as the Arabs and Jews are said to be descended from the two renowned sons of Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, US Officials revealed that the peace settlement will be known as the Abraham Accord, a historical reference to the brotherhood nature between the Jews and the Arabs. Biblically, Ishmael is the eldest son of Abraham by Hagar, he is the ancestor of the Arab people; Isaac (the legitimate son) on the other hand, is the ancestor of the Jews. This fact is buttressed by the reverence of these two sons of Abraham by the respective offsprings: the Arabs venerate Ishmael as evidence in Islam, and the Jews Isaac as represented in Judaism and Christianity.

The recent history of these two descendants of Abraham has been a very hostile one, having gone to war several times with fatal and dare consequences. The tension between them is still extant, this recent agreement might trigger it more crises – we hope not! The state of disagreement between the brothers became worse in the twentieth century (the 1900s), It began with the establishment of the Jewish state of Israel in the territory formally known as Palestine, occupied an claimed by the Arabs, and recognized to be rightfully theirs by other Arab nations.
Unlike the Arabs who for thousands of years had flourished in the Middle East, the Jews had been dispersed out of the region for thousands of years until their presence in the Middle East became very minimal and their ancestral homeland (Israel) taken over by Arabs. After thousands of years wandering in Europe, unwelcome, and often maltreated, the Jews of Europe united under the banner of Zionism and embark on a mission to establish a national state for the Jewish people. During the First and Second World Wars, Britain and France shared the Middle East between them since the Collapse of the Ottoman Empire which ruled over the Arabs for hundreds of years. Britain was given the mandate over Palestine.

During the British Mandate in Palestine, Zionist and Jews generally began migrating into Palestine which then had an Arab majority, by 1945, encouraged by experience in Nazi Germany, where millions of Jews were killed during the holocaust, many Jews migrated to Palestine, by this time the relationship between the Arab hosts and the Jewish migrant has become very tense and hostile. By the time the British Mandate ends in 1948, the Jews move and declared the establishment of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948. The United States of America is the first nation in the world to recognized Israel.
Between 1948 to date, only a few Arab and Middle Eastern nations had recognized Israel, most of them are not in support; they considered the establishment of Israel as a great act of injustice to the Palestinian Arabs – their bosom kin. During the early years of Israel, the Arabs nations had mobilized themselves and fought wars against Israel but had been unsuccessful on each occasion. But Israel had succeeded in annexing previous territories inhabited by the Palestinians Arabs, dispersing them into neighboring Arab countries. The search for peace between Israel and its neighbours has proved to be a difficult task.

According to the Jewish Virtual Library, the first Middle Eastern nations to recognized Israel is Iran, during the Shah’s regime in March 1950 (the recognition was withdrawn after the Islamic Revolution that brought the Ayatollah to power in 1979. Egypt is the first Arab nation to recognized Israel, the peace agreement was signed by President Anwar al-Sadat of Egypt in March 1979 (the year of the Iranian revolution), Egypt has not ended it’s diplomatic relationship with Israel, in fact, it’s current President Abdelfatah Elsisi is one of the Arab leaders to applaud the tripartite peace accord between the US, Israel, and the UAE. Among those Arab nations who once recognized Israel but ended the relations include Tunisia, Oman, and Qatar. The UAE had never recognized Israel until today.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a sovereign nation made up of formerly independent Emirates: Abu Dhabi (serves as Capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. UAE had never before recognized Israel, but today history has been made thanks to the initiative of President Donald Trump of the US, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahya, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the de facto President of the UAE, as the ruling President is ill. Joining Egypt, and Jordan, UAE is one of the offspring of Ishmael to make peace with Israel the offspring of Isaac.
Several things are agreed on the peace accord, among which is to end Israel’s claim of sovereignty over some Palestinian territories, as well as the forging of economic, social and political relationship between Israel and the UAE. In the joint statement by the US, UAE, and Israel, it was revealed that they Middle-Eastern nations as the “US most reliable and capable” partners in the Middle-East. This explains why President Trump initiated the peace agreement between them. But those who were cited as a beneficiary of the agreement, Palestine, are not pleased by the development and had accused the UAE of backstabbing.
Aljazeera quoted a statement by HAMAS (a Palestinian militant organization) through its spoke person Fawzi Barhoun, accusing the Emirate of backstabbing the Palestinian people. A member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), Dr. Hanan Ashrawi has accused the UAE of selling their friends (the Palestinians) out.

The Peace Agreement is generating mixed reactions across the world, many are celebrating it as a victory for peace in the volatile Middle East region, while others are condemning it as a continuous endorsement of illegal occupation of Palestine by Israel. Be as it may, Trump has earned a clap, and that has improved his rating which might favour his re-election bid come November this year. The Abraham Accord is one of the biggest peace agreement since the Jordan agreement in 1994, and President Trump should be appreciated for initiating it, for making peace between the descendants of Ishmael and Isaac.
