INSECURITY: Tension Hightens in Cross River As 5 People Were Abducted in Three Days

At least three have been abducted withing 72 hours in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.

When added to the two abducted recently in Obudu, that totals at least five that have been kidnapped in the State recently.

The latest victim was kidnapped on Wednesday afternoon at her shop along Mayne Avenue in Calabar South. An attempt to do so earlier in the year had failed.

Sources say she owns a shop which sells drinks in wholesale after Basol fueling station at Mayne Avenue, a stone throw from where the clergyman in charge of the Bible Christian Crusade Mission, Pastor Joseph Okoro was kidnapped in December 2018.

Also, it is less than 500 meters away from where the Commissioner for Watwr Resources in Governor Ben Ayade’s first term in office, Gabe Odu-Oji was kidnapped and ended spending about a month in captivity.

On Tuesday, one Mr. Unyime, a younger sibling to the owner of Success Villa hotel was kidnapped.

On Monday, an unnamed man working at a quarry in Akamkpa but residing at Calabar South was also kidnapped in his house.

In Obudu, at least two were kidnapped in September with criminal elements said to be snatching motorcycles at gun point with some of their victims strangled.

The vigilante is said to be ill equipped with the Toyota Sienna vehicle used before now as patrol vehicle said to have been possessed by the Chairman of the group, Mr. Lico Ushiekpan as his personal vehicle.

The vigilantes are said to operate sometimes without torches as the council Chairman has not empowered them so far.

The son of Pastor Ogbeson, a clergyman of the Assemblies of God church in Mgbenegeh is said to have been kidnapped while the daughter of one Mr. Chidi, a spare parts dealer was also kidnapped.

Mr. Chidi’s daughter was released while Pastor Ogbeson’s son remains in captivity.
